Topic outline:

Literacy: During this topic we will be using the book Kensukes Kingdom to help the children with their learning. Children will explore the adventure that a young boy called Michael goes on. They will be producing persuasive leaflets, writing diaries and explaining how forces work through floating and sinking. Mathematics: Children will be learning place value, addition, subtraction and multiplication. There will be some exciting links to our topic book too! We will be hoping for a lot of learning around the childrens already good mental maths skills. Science: During the science for this term we will use Kensukes Kingdom and its link to boats (including going on a very exciting trip to experience going on a boat) to think about forces relating to floating and sinking.

Suggested visits: to find out more about boats and sailing why not visit one of these interesting places. Lots of them are free. Doe Park Pugneys Water Park Roundhay Park - Leeds

It will be great if the children could experience the feeling of floating and sinking for themselves!

Topic challenges (you can choose just one): 1. We challenge you to find at least 5 things that float and 5 things that sink. 2. Find 5 interesting facts about a boat. 3. How many different types of boats are there?

When reading you can ask questions about the book. Encourage them to describe the characters and setting. What the character might be feeling and why. Get them to predict what they think will happen in the story.
