Tool holding devices for drilling machines For drilling machines, the most commonly used tool is the

drill. Out of all, there are number of alternations present with each having its own limitations. Like straight shank used for small drilling operations and tapered shank is for medium to large drilling operations. To hold these drills, there are number of tool holding accessories in which three jaw drill chuck is one of them. This drill chuck has self centering feature and used for small drills upto 15 mm with straight shank.

Similarly there is another drill holding tapered sleeve used to support taper shanks in the spindle socket. These tapered sleeves are used to hold drill identified by using numbers from 1 6 and drill diameter.

The Morse taper angle for drill is 3 and if the tapered mating surfaces are clean and in good condition then this small angle is enough to generate frictional drive. At the taper shank end, two flats are machined leaving tang portion. The purpose is to remove from spindle socket using drift.

During operation, if it is desired to produce single hole using several tools in single operation, then quickchange chuck is best suitable for that. The main reason is that it reduces the time and enables us to change without stopping machine.

Another tool holding device is the safety tap chuck in which we produce tapping blind holes in reversing device. However it is difficult task to reverse the direction at proper moment so we need to use safety chuck for this task.
