MODELING OSMOSIS (LAB) PROBLEM: Which way will water flow when a raw egg is placed in 250ml of vinegar?

HYPOTHESIS: If a raw egg is placed in vinegar and left for 3 days, then the water will flow into the egg from an area of high concentration to an area of low concentration allowing the egg to expand. THEORY: Osmosis is the diffusion of water from a place of high concentration to an area of low concentration across a selectively permeable membrane. The vinegar will dissolve the eggshell then the water will go through into the egg. Fill the egg and make it larger. The water will go into the egg because there is more water in the vinegar then the egg. PROCEDURE: 1. Measure circumference of a raw egg using string and a ruler in cm. 2. Place egg in beaker and fill with 250 mL of vinegar. 3. Record observations. 4. Measure circumference for 4 days and record observations. DATA/OBSERVATIONS: DAYS 1 3 CIRCUMFERENCE (cm) 14.5 16.5 LIQUID LEVEL (ml) 300 275 OBSERVATIONS 50 ml displaced Lots of bubbles on shell 200ml feels like a water balloon Some shell left on soft 200 ml No shell

CONCLUSION In this lab we modeled osmosis. First the vinegar (weak acid) burned off the eggshell. Once that was done water in the vinegar (high concentration) moved into the eggshell (low concentration) allowing the egg to expand. The egg did expand and 100% of the eggs did expand, so my hypothesis was correct. ANALYSIS

First in the lab we hypotheses if water, would go into the egg, or come out of the egg. Next we looked at it 3 times each time the egg grew. In the end the egg grew showing that water had gone into the egg.
