Problem Set 4

Out: February 6, 2012

You should think of this problem set as review problems for Midterm I. It is due Friday February 10 at 5 pm. 1. Suppose you have an unlimited supply of qubits in the state = 0 + 1 and qubits in the state 0 . Give quantum circuits (and specify the inputs) for realizing the following quantum states: 2 00 01 + 10 2 11 . / 2 00 + / 2 01 + / 2 10 + / 2 11 . 00 11 . 2. Write the unitary matrix describing the quantum circuit shown below:

3. Consider a measurement of a qubit in the basis u = 3/2 0 + 1/2 1 and v = 1/2 0 + 3/2 1 , with measurement value 1 if the outcome is u and 2 if the outcome is v . Write the observable M corresponding to the measurement specied above. Now if M is the Hamiltonian acting on the qubit which is in state (0) = 0 , describe the state of the qubit at time t . (assume that we are working in units such that h = 1).
