Phillips 2004 How should the jaw be lowered for singing?

I have heard various music teachers tell their students to open their mouths wide, which leads to various issues. Students end up with a lot of tension in their jaws and they pinch the vocal tract. Students should be told to drop their jaws from the hinges and relax the muscles. In the field, I will do my best to make sure I am not giving my students mixed messages and to help them understand how to properly lower their jaws.
