Phillips 2004 Who is called the father of modern choral conductors and why? Robert Shaw is considered the father of modern choral conductors. His rich choral tone, pure sound, and rhythmic diction separated him from the rest. He was known for being dedicated to the major historical periods of musical creativity. I think it is extremely important to have a good grasp on the choral directors of the past. There is so much to learn from the different techniques that have been used over the years. Sometimes we may want to try something we think is new, but may have been tried and found not to be useful. Thats why we must know the history of our field.
