VVLead Fellowship Program 2014: Call for Applications

Posted on October 9, 2013 by Jaya Jung Mahat About The VVLead Fellowship Program supports a global network of emerging and established women leaders who provide unusual and sustainable solutions to pressing problems that have impeded women and girls full participation in their societies and economies. Recognizing that in order to advance the causes of women, women themselves must connect with, empower, equip and inspire one another at all levels of society, Vital Voices with funding support provided by the UK governments Department for International Development is committed to helping create a unified response, not just from womens rights activists and sectoral experts, but also from a wide range of professionals and practitioners across fields and methodologies. The VVLead Fellowship Program is a critical step in this response, offering participants unique opportunities to exchange information, obtain resources and tools, mentor and be mentored and receive vital training over the course of three years through offerings tailored to meet their needs, goals and objectives. Who Can Apply? Vital Voices is seeking applications for the VVLead Fellowship Program from women leaders who are committed to tackling issues related to economic disparities, violence against women and harmful cultural practices with particular focus on forced/early marriage in order to create a more prosperous and secure world. Knowing that this work will take many forms, leaders may be engaged in this change through work in a variety of fields including

business, non-profit/non-governmental organization, public office/government (elected or appointed), media, advocacy initiative or community-based organization. Eligible applicants must be:

20 years or older; Living and working for change in a developing country; Able to demonstrate vision, strategy and high-impact; and Actively committed to the progress of their cause on a full-time basis.

Call for Applications: Anti-Corruption Youth Essay Competition 2013

Are you an African youth concerned about corruption on the continent? Have you or anyone close to you been a victim of corruption? Do you believe your future is in any way threatened by corrupt practices? Would you want your voice to be heard on the issue of corruption? And do you have a passion for writing?

Then you should seriously consider participating in this years Anti-Corruption Youth Essay Competition, organized by the African Union Advisory Board on Corruption (AUABC). This is within the framework of festivities to mark the tenth anniversary of the African Union Convention on Preventing and Combating Corruption (AUCPCC) which include the annual International Anti-corruption week, which is a major item in the Regional Anticorruption Programme for Africa, developed by the UNECA, in collaboration with the AUABC.

The Regional Anti-corruption Program for Africa aims at up scaling the fight against corruption on the continent with a view to ensuring a corruption free, better governed and economically prosperous African continent. As you are well aware, corruption negatively affects all segments and groups in society, particularly the youth, who constitute the majority in many African countries. This essay competition is therefore intended to serve two main purposes: to establish the level of awareness, among African youths of the manifestations and impact of corruption; and to provide a platform for African youths to present their perspectives on the causes, manifestations and impact of corruption and corrupt practices. This years theme is How to make corruption unattractive in Africa if you have a story or an experience to share relating to this theme, this is a wonderful opportunity for you to make your submission and let your voice count. The authors of the best three essays will be flown to Arusha the AUABC host city for festivities to mark the tenth anniversary of the African Union Convention on Preventing and Combating Corruption (AUCPCC) which include the 2013 annual International Anticorruption week, to directly take part in the festivities. More significantly, the five leading authors will participate in a final competition, during which they will make oral presentations (of their essays) to a panel of judges, who will select the three top winners who will then receive special awards from African dignitaries and officials in attendance. The Future Of Storytelling 2013: Call for Applications

About this course What to Expect

Together with a whole network of media researchers, creators and students we will: Learn storytelling basics such as antagonist/protagonist relationships, narrative/narrated time, Have a look at exciting current media projects Analyze how they are designed and executed based on aforementioned basics And discuss how (and if) new online tools and formats change the way stories are told and perceived.

The 8-chapter course starts on October 25th, 2013 and ends on December 20th, 2013. It will offer weekly video material, lessons, interviews and tasks on the following topics (not necessarily in this order):

Storytelling basics Serial formats (on the TV, web and beyond) Storytelling in role-playing games Interactive storytelling in video games Transmedia storytelling Alternate-reality gaming Augmented reality and location-based storytelling The role of tools, interfaces and information architectures in current storytelling.

Our first Storytelling-MOOC will focus on fictional formats. Inspire and Help Understand Our goal is to inspire and help understand. To broaden our horizon of what is and might be possible and what has already been attempted, and what has succeeded or even failed and why. In several little tasks youll analyze and practice storytelling on your own and in teams. Why this MOOC is Interdisciplinary Based at the Design Department at the University of Applied Sciences Potsdam, this MOOC is not only interdisciplinary, but also includes guest lectures and project presentations by game designers, writers, transmedia producers, TV makers, executives and theorists from many different fields of study. We will thus be able to discuss content, structures and technologies from various perspectives. Learning Outcomes Our MOOC will help you answer the following questions: 1. How do fictional stories work? Which structures and mechanics are used?

2. How do new technologies influence the ways stories are told and perceived and which new media formats have been developed during the last years? 3. How can technologies, interfaces and visuals engage an audience fast and continuously? 4. How can I develop and implement my own story-ideas on my own or in teams? Prior Knowledge No prior knowledge of storytelling mechanics is needed, but can be helpful. Interest in creative processes and new technologies is welcome and encouraged.

Our MOOC is free of charge for anyone interested worldwide. However, how much of your free time you invest is up to you. When will this course start? This MOOC will start on October 25th, 2013 and run for eight weeks until December 20th, 2013. How much time will I need to participate? From just watching the video lessons (about 20-30 min per week) to engaging in discussions and tasks (about 2-4 hours per week), exploring our reading list and even presenting your own current projects via essays or video link on our Facebook page, your involvement is entirely up to you. The more you engage yourself, the more you gain. Is this course only available in English? Yes, for now. Due to technical and production time restrictions, we will only be able to offer this first MOOC in ONE language. As English is the language most applying students here share, we decided to go for it. However, we are looking for options to make this course available in other languages. My written English is not that good. Can I still participate in the tasks? Of course! Although language is an important part of storytelling in general, great works have been created without even a single audible word (e.g. silent movies). We are working on making our tasks as language-independent as possible. Good grammar and spelling skills are not the only key to succeeding in this course.

Will there be a second edition/run of this course? Not for now. Although we would love to create and host a so-to-speak 2nd season of this MOOC, there are no definite plans yet. This experience will therefore be unique for now. For details

Hansen Summer Institute on Leadership and International Cooperation 2014

Posted on October 3, 2013 by Jaya Jung Mahat ABOUT The Hansen Summer Institute on Leadership and International Cooperation is an exciting international program funded by a generous grant from the Fred J. Hansen Foundation. Four Hansen Summer Institutes took place in San Diego, California in July of 2007, 2008, 2009 and 2013 and provided a unique University-based leadership experience and program in international cooperation. For three weeks, young American men and women joined students from a variety of developing countries and regions of social strife. Between then and now, Hansen alumni have remained in contact via a variety of social networking sites and projects funded by the Hansen Foundation. We are happy to announce the Hansen Summer Institute will host its fifth group of young leaders in July 2014 at the University of San Diego School of Leadership and Education Sciences (SOLES). A primary goal of the program focuses on creating an international community of young scholars who will use their summer experience as a foundation for creating lasting friendships and acquiring common practical understanding of a more peaceful future. Program elements will involve classroom instruction and hands-on training in the latest techniques of conflict resolution, mediation, and inter-cultural management. Classroom training will complement local excursions to San Diego historical attractions and cultural events including a fourth of July parade, a Padres baseball game, and a harbor cruise. Hansen Summer Institute training aims to provide participants a leadership toolbox for resolving conflict and building a better future for their respective countries. ELIGIBILITY To participate in the Hansen Summer Institute, candidates must meet the following eligibility requirements: NON US STUDENTS: (from underdeveloped countries or countries at risk of conflict)

Be under 25 years of age with at least two (2) years of college/university.

Have an academic advisor verify, in writing, the candidates English proficiency. (Semi-finalists will be required to participate in a telephone interview.) Have a valid international passport, with US visa, if necessary, by the time the program begins. Preference will be given to students who have never been to the United States before but all qualified students are encouraged to apply.

US STUDENTS: (Students from any California university)

Be under 25 years of age with at least two (2) years of college/university). Be an active student, in good standing, at a California college or university.

ALL APPLICANTS: Successful applicants must demonstrate leadership potential by having worked outside of class in community service, another public service, or in a non-governmental organization. A letter of reference from such a group or organization is required. All participants of the program are provided with:

Non-US participants are provided with:

International airfare to and from their home city Health insurance for the duration of the program

Candidates can apply for either a masters-level degree or a professional development certificate in peace and conflict studies at one of six Rotary Peace Centers. Option One: Masters Degree Option

The masters-level program requires, at minimum, a bachelors degree in a related field, and three years of relevant work experience. The certificate program requires five years of experience and proficiency in English. Up to 100 fellows are selected every year in a globally competitive process based on personal, academic, and professional achievements. The 2015-16 academic term deadline is 1 July 2014. UNSCN photo contest: Your FOOD, Your HEALTH, Your FUTURE

Posted on September 25, 2013 by Jaya Jung Mahat About Your FOOD, Your HEALTH, Your FUTURE aims at giving young people the opportunity to raise their voice on aspects of Food, Health and Climate Change they deem relevant to be discussed during a meeting gathering up to 300 world leading experts and government officials committed to address those issues. This campaign is implemented by the United Nations System Standing Committee on Nutrition (UNSCN) in collaboration and with the financial support of the Public Health and Environmental Department (PHE) of the World Health Organization. Your FOOD, Your HEALTH, Your FUTURE is aimed at young people aged 18 to 25 years affected by changes in their environment and wishing to voice their opinion on the links between climate change, nutrition and health. Emissions related to food and the impacts of climate change on health, agriculture and the food system profoundly alter the way we grow and produce food. Your FOOD, Your HEALTH, Your FUTURE Photo Contest aims to gather pictures that communicate powerfully about problems and solutions but also encourage action. The three topics to be covered are:

The impact of climate change on nutrition and/or health; The impact of food production, food consumption and food waste on climate change and the environment; Developing healthier, fairer and more sustainable food systems: addressing food production, food consumption and waste.

We particularly relish in finding pictures that communicate hope, optimism and the possibility of change and that convey a clear message to the scientific, economic and political communities. Our ultimate aims are to raise public awareness about the causes and consequences of climate change, encourage the public and policymakers to act, especially promoting sustainable practices; and to show the benefits of implementing climate sensitive actions in the food systems. An international jury of experts on the issues related to food, health and climate change will judge the images and pick the best pictures. These pictures will then be used in a 2-minute video which will be shown on 12 November 2013, during the Nutrition and Sustainability Seminar organized by the UNSCN in close

Call for Applications: Reagan-Fascell Democracy Fellows Program

Posted on September 13, 2013 by Jaya Jung Mahat Program The Reagan-Fascell Democracy Fellows Program is an international exchange program that offers practitioners, scholars, and journalists from around the world the opportunity to spend five months at the National Endowment for Democracy (NED), in Washington DC, in order to undertake independent research on democratic challenges worldwide. While in residence, fellows reflect on their experiences; conduct research and writing; consider best practices and lessons learned; and develop professional relationships within a global network of democracy advocates. Support Located within NEDs International Forum for Democratic Studies, the program provides a rich intellectual setting for educational exchange and professional development. The Forum also publishes the Journal of Democracy, holds conferences, and provides access to NEDs Democracy Resource Center and Library. The program offers research support and facilitates fellows outreach to Washingtons advocacy, media, academic, and policy communities. All fellowships include a monthly payment, health insurance, and roundtrip travel reimbursement. The program does not provide financial assistance for accompanying family or other dependents. Participation The program runs two five-month fellowship sessions per year, during which fellows are expected to work full time on their projects. Practitioners focus on strategies and best practices for strengthening democracy in their country of interest; scholars conduct original research for publication. Projects may address the economic, political, social, legal, or

cultural aspects of democratic development and include a range of methodologies and approaches. The program hosts an active calendar of events, including an introduction to NED and its partner institutions. Fellows are expected to present their work and prepare a written product during their stay. Eligibility The fellowship is intended primarily for individuals from developing and aspiring democracies. Distinguished scholars from the United States and other established democracies are eligible to apply. Practitioners and journalists should have substantial work experience in their fields, while scholars are expected to have a Ph.D., or academic equivalent, at the time of application. The program does not support professional training, fieldwork, or students working toward a degree, nor does it provide funding to implement projects in the field.
