Stem Case 2- Bug Adaptions

Subject: Science with Technology Fused Grade Level: Upper Elementary 4th-5th grade Authors: Taylor Niewoit, Chloe Minnaar, Grace Coffey Overview For Case 2 our group created a lesson plan for upper elementary students using one of the STEM disciplines. STEM disciplines include Science, Technology, Engineering and Math. For this lesson we incorporate science as well as technology into our lesson. We plan on educating students about how bugs adapt into their environment in order to survive. At the end of lesson students will be able to Identify what an adaption is Describe the three different adaptions (physical, physiological, and behavioral) Observe and be able to identify 3 insects that live in their state and describe how they have adapted in their environment Describe how characteristics may be advantageous for survival and reproduction Demonstrate their knowledge by creating their own adapted bugs and with 85% accuracy using the three adaptions. 4.3.1 Observe and describe how offspring are very much, but not exactly, like their parents or one another. Describe how these differences in physical characteristics among individuals in a population may be advantageous for survival and reproduction. 4.3.2 Observe, compare and record the physical characteristics of living plants or animals from widely different environments. Describe how each plant or animal is adapted to its environment. 4.3.3 Design investigations to explore how organisms meet some of their needs by responding to stimuli from their environments. PowerPoint Art Supplies Bug identification Handout Pencil 1. Start the lesson off by having students name bugs they see in their environment commonly. Then discuss what about those bugs enable them to survive. 2. Use computer technology and projector to display PowerPoint slides 3. Talk through each slide allowing students to be very

interactive with the slides and pictures. 4. Thoroughly explain what an adaption is and provide examples. 5. On slides 3-5 give students information about the three different adaption types. 6. Go through the slides of different bugs that have adapted over time 7. After PowerPoint have students go outside and look around and identify three different bugs. 8. Students will be provided with three handouts and a pencil. They will complete the handout on their own. 9. Students will come inside and share about the bugs they have found and the adaptions. Teacher will make any suggestions or corrections if needed. 10. Students will now work individually to create their own bug with different art supplies provided to them. 11. Students will be graded on the accuracy of the use of the three different adaption types. *Integrated Technology* Although displaying a PowerPoint has been said to be a non-effective way to teach our group feels it was the best method to teach our lesson on bug adaption. We created a very informational and interesting PowerPoint that will allow students to see examples of different bugs and their adaptions with the use of pictures and also words. This method would be most effective because a projector allows for all students to be able to visibly see the slides. We feel this method of technology will be very beneficial to the students. Informal AssessmentStudents will go outside and identify 3 different bugs and write a short paragraph on how that bug is adapted to its environment in order to survive with 90% accuracy. Formal AssessmentStudents will demonstrate their knowledge on bug adaption by creating their own bug Students will then discuss how their animal is adapted to its environment using the three different adaptions (physical, physiological, and behavioral) with 85%v accuracy. Assessment

For our lesson plan we first looked at the upper elementary science standards to come up with a lesson for a 4th-5th grade class. Based on the Indiana Academic Standards we found the topic Life Science had very important standards we felt would be very beneficial to our students. Using these standards we were able to create an effective lesson with the integration of technology. Technology plays a very important role in educations so we used it as a method to teach the adaption of bugs in their environment. Case 2 was to create a lesson plan using one of the STEM disciplines. We chose to do a lesson with science will fusing technology. The strength of our lesson we feel is that our learning objectives directly relate to our assessment. We also utilized a technology by allowing students to effectively see different types of bugs and the bugs adaption firsthand. A weakness of our lesson plan may be students will have a hard time using creativity to create their own bugs. They might closely resemble a bug they are familiar with so in order to prevent this we will encourage students to use critical thinking and creativity to produce a bug showing their knowledge of adaptions. Overall we are confident that our lesson plan will be effective to students when learning about adaption of living things, particularly bugs. The lesson is interesting and informational and will be very relatable to students because of their own personal experiences with bugs!
