General Learning Outcomes: Describe some common living things, and identify needs of those living things. Specific Learning Outcomes: Identify the requirements of plants to maintain life; i.e., air, light, suitable temperature, water, growing medium, space; and recognize that we must provide these for plants in our care.

LEARNINGOBJECTIVES
Students will: Identify the needs of plants (water, air, soil, sun, space). Describe why each plant need is important to the plants survival. Recognize we may have to provide plants with what they need to live.

ASSESSMENTS
Observations: Responses to Questions Participation in Activities Written/Performance Assessments: Participation in Activities Students Drawings Key Questions: What do plants need to grow? PROCEDURE Introduction( 3 min.):

Say: Good Morning Grade Ones. Today in Science we are going to learn about the needs of plants. By the end of today I hope you all will know what a plant needs to live and be able to take of your own plant.
Video Clip -

Say: I need you guys to watch and listen carefully for what a plant might need. http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=xldSRWtNMXE (2:40) Stop mid-way through clip (when the characters pause) Ask: What do you think happened? He hid the seeds and now theyre gone! Continue clip Say: Keep that video in mind and were going to do some brainstorming.

Body( 25 min.):
Brainstorming (5 minutes) Ask: what things do plants need to grow? Create small thought web on the board that lists: sun, water, air, soil, and space. Plant Activity (10 minutes) Say: I need a volunteer. Who would like to be our seed? Give the seed headband to the student, then randomly pass out the rest of the headbands to all students. Start with a seed and create a circle around them. Ask: what is the first thing we need to do to the seed? Plant it in soil. Ask: Why does the plant need _______? What does _______ do for the plant? What does the plant need now?

Think back to the video.

Soil- soil students act out covering the seed so it has somewhere to plant its roots. Soil gives plants nutrients and a place to grow. Sun - sun students act out heating the seed and giving it energy. The sun Water- water students acts out creating rain on the seed to create food for the seed . Space- space students act out making room for the seed to grow. Air- air students acts out creating air for the plant so it can make food out of water and the suns energy Get everyone to do their part at once. Take certain students out of the circle. Ask: what would happen to the plant if we took ______ away? Have the seed student shrink. Say: Sometimes plants dont get all the things they need and we have to give them to them so they can stay alive. Thats why we water our plants and keep them in the sun. Drawings (10 minutes) Say: Good job everyone! Okay, you can take your seats now. For our last activity of the day, I want you to think of your favorite kind of flower. I want you to take one piece of paper and draw me a picture of your favorite plant getting everything it needs. I want you to write the word for each thing you draw, if you can. You can think about the video we watched, the web we made, or the game we played. Pass out blank sheets of paper.

Closure( 2 min.):
Feedback From Students: Ask: Who has a birthday in ______, Can you each name one thing you learned today? Assessment: Say: Who thinks that they could take care of their very own plant? Feedback To Students: Say: You all behaved very well today. Thank you! You can hand in your drawings on your way out for recess.
