NEW ELECTROLYTES FOR BATTERIES

USING LiF SALT AND BORON BASED ANION RECEPTORS ___________________________________________________________________________ RELATED SPECIFICATIONS: ___________________________________________________________________________ ISSUING AUTHORITY: ___________________________________________________________________________ CONTENTS: ___________________________________________________________________________ FOREWORD:

Figure 1: A model of electrolyte using Lithium Fluoride (LiF) salt.

Most non-aqueous lithium battery electrolyte solvents are Lewis bases that interact with cations, causing a high degree of ion pairing and the formation of triplets and higher aggregates. This decreases the lithium ion transference and results in polarization losses in batteries. Another problem with lithium battery electrolytes is decomposition of the salt. In searching the new chemistry of lithium-ion batteries with higher energy density, non-LiPF6 electrolytes with higher lithium ion transference number, higher electrochemical stability and wider operating temperature are desired. In order to increase the transference of lithium ions, one new approach has been developed at Brookhaven National Laboratory (BNL) by using boron based anion receptors to complex anions. It was found that the complexing agents have the ability to promote the dissolution of LiF, which is normally insoluble in organic solvents. Recently, 2-(pentauorophenyl)-tetrauoro1,3,2-benzodioxaborole, another boron compound, was used as a bifunctional electrolyte additive for lithium-ion batteries, which acts as both the redox shuttle and the anion receptor

INTRODUCTION: The objectives are: To design a product that can be used at a long time, friendly, and have a good conductivity To design a product which can be work at room temperature and low tempertaure respectively. To design a product that can be compatible applied in daily life. SCOPE: All kind of battery electrolyte, and electrolyte used for recheargable battery DEFINITIONS : PERFORMANCE REQUIREMENTS : TPFPB Tris(pentafluorophenyl) borane and LiF(Lithium Fluoride) were dried under vacuum at 80C for 12h using 90wt.% active material 5wt.% acetylene black 5wt.% poly(vinylidene fluoride) Aluminum foil and copper foil were used as current collectors for the cathode and anode, respectively

ACCEPTANCE STANDARDS : The electrolyte mechanism must not conflict with existing patent. Must be noticed about the esthetic value This product must be easy and quickly rechargeable also can be use in room temperature and low temperature respectively. Has a long time period of lifetime

DISPOSAL : OPERATION REQUIREMENTS : LiF(Lithium Fluoride) can be dissolved with rather high concentration in carbon-atebased solvent systems after adding anion receptors as additives
