Foreword
T o the engineer responsible for the design and operation
o f safe and efficient piping systems, t h i s "Datalog" i s presented w i t h the hope that i t w i l l f a c i l i t a t e the burdensome
tasks peculiar to piping layout.
Painstaking efforts have been made to assemble such
standards, technical data, charts and recommendations as
are necessary for him to cope w i t h the diverse problems i n
Power P l a n t and Industrial Piping, many o f which, due to
the trend toward higher pressures and temperatures, are o f a
highly specialized nature.
The "Datalog" divides i t s e l f into two sections, the f i r s t
of which i s devoted almost entirely to dimensions and general notes w i t h reference to fabrication and shop practice.
The Standards shown are those approved by recognized
engineering groups such a s the American Standards Association, American Society for Testing and Materials, American
Society of Mechanical Engineers, American Welding Society,
P i p e Fabrication Institute and others. The data contained
herein are those a s taken from the most recent issues of
these Standards.
The Technical Section, which begins on page 165, includes technical data, charts and recommendations, which,
we be1ieve, conform with the most stringent engineering
practice. A great part of t h i s information i s the result o f
tests and investigations conducted by our own Research
Department, supplemented by a background of successful
performance i n industry.
The knowledge o f piping which we have gained i n over a
half-century has not been confined to design and fabrication
alone, but includes a wide f i e l d experience i n erecting,
testing and placing in operation, p i p i n g systems for every
power plant and industrial need. The publishing of t h i s
book has been actuated by our desire to convey to the Engineering Fraternity and t o the buyers and users of piping,
the knowledge gained by extensive research and operation
throughout that period.

Due ta the fact that metals i n general lose strength a s service temperatures increase, the ASME Boiler and Pressure Vessel
Code, Section I, Power Boilers, and the ANSl Code for Pressure Piping, 831.1, Power Piping, have estobjished safe working
stresses for mast materials used, based on the service temperature. Allowable stress values for the various grades of pipe most
cammonly used i n Power P i p i n g are shown on pages 18 through 21, c l a s s i f i e d under the applicable ASTM specification. These tobulotions cover ollowable stresses (SE) for bath the Boiler Code, Section I and 831.1 Pawer Piping Code a t temperatures ranging from
-20F t o 1500DF, w i t h the 1250 t o 1500F range applying to the Boiler Code only. I t should be noted also that the Bailer Code indicates allowable stresses for some of the materials ot temperatures higher than those allowed i n the Power Piping Code, 831.1,
w h i c h are tabulated here. Similarly, the Code for Pressure P i p i n g a l l o w s higher warking stresses for Petroleum Refinery Piping i n
ANSl 831.3, Gas Transmission and D i s t r i b u t i o n Piping i n ANSl 831.8, Industrial Gas and Air Piping, etc. For allowable stresses
for these code iurisdictions, the designer i s referred t a the applicable code.
The f o l l o w i n g formulae shall be used i n determining minimum pipe w a l l thi,cknesses required for known pressures a t given temperatures, or for c a l c u l a t i n g maximum allowable working pressures for known miiiimum w a l l thicknesses at given temperatures.

PRESSURE DESIGN OF PIPING
COMPONENTS
303
GENERAL
Components manufactured in accordance with standards listed in Table 326.1 shall be considered suitable
for use at pressuretemperature ratings in accordance
with para. 302.2.1. The rules in para. 304 are intended
for pressure design of components not covered in Table

COMPONENTS
304.1
Straight Pipe
304.1.1 General
(a) The required thickness of straight sections of pipe
shall be determined in accordance with Eq. (2):
The minimum thickness T for the pipe selected, considering manufacturer's minus tolerance, shall be not less
than I,.
(b) The following nomenclature is used in the equations for pressure design of straight pipe.
t , = minimum required thickness, including mechanical, corrosion, and erosion allowances
t = pressure design thickness, as calculated in accordance with para. 304.1.2 for internal pressure or as determined in accordance with para.
304.1.3 for external pressure
c = the sum of the mechanical allowances (thread
or groove depth) plus corrosion and erosion
allowances. For threaded components, the
nominal thread depth (dimension h of ASME
B1.20.1, or equivalent) shall apply. For machined surfaces or grooves where the tolerance
is not specified, the tolerance shall be assumed
to be 0.5 mm (0.02 in.) in addition to the specified depth of the cut.
T = pipe wall thickness (measured or minimum
per purchase specification)
d = inside diameter of pipe. For pressure design
calculation, the inside diameter of the pipe is
the maximum value allowable under the purchase specification.
P = internal design gage pressure
D = outside diameter of pipe as listed in tables of
standards or specifications or as measured
E = quality factor from Table A-IA o r A-1B
S = stress value for material from Table A-1
Y = coefficient from Table 304.1.1, valid for
t < D/6 and for materials shown. The value
of Y may be interpolated for intermediate temperatures.

GENERAL NOTE:
This Figure illustrates the nomenclature of para. 304.3.3. I t does not indicate complete welding deteilt or a preferred method of
construction. For typical weld details, see Fig. 328.5.40.
304.3.3-304.3.4
(b) The rules in para. 304.3.4 are minimum requirements, valid only within the limits of geometry shown
in Fig. 304.3.4, and only where the axis of the outlet
intersects and is perpendicular to the axis of the header.
Where these requirements are not met, or where nonintegral material such as a ring, pad, or saddle has been
added to the outlet, pressure design shall be qualified as required by para. 304.7.2.
(c) Nomenclature. The nomenclature used herein is
illustrated in Fig. 304.3.4. Note the use of subscript x
signifying extruded. Refer to para. 304.3.3(a) for nomenclature not listed here.
d, = the design inside diameter of the extruded outlet, measured at the level of the outside surface
of the header. This dimension is taken after
removal of all mechanical and corrosion allowances, and all thickness tolerances.
hx = height of the extruded outlet. This must be
equal to or greater than r, (except as shown
in sketch (b) in Fig. 304.3.4).
Lj = height of reinforcement zone
= 0.7
T, = corroded finished thickness of extruded outlet,
measured at a height equal to rx above the
outside surface of the header
dZ = half width of reinforcement zone (equal to
dx )
rx = radius of curvature of external contoured portion of outlet, measured in the plane containing the axes of the header and branch.
(d) Limitations on Radius r,. The external contour
radius rx is subject to the following limitations.
(I) minimum r , : the lesser of 0.05Db or 38 mm
(1.50 in.);
(2) maximum r , shall not exceed:
(a)for D , < D N 200 (NPS 8), 32 mm (1.25
in.);
(b) for D b 2 D N 200,
O.lDb
+ 13 mm (0.50 in.);

304.3.5-304.4.2
(I) when branch size approaches run size, particularly if pipe formed by more than 1.5% cold expansion,
or expanded pipe of a material subject to work hardening, is used as the run pipe;
(2) where repetitive stresses may be imposed on
the connection by vibration, pulsating pressure, temperature cycling, etc.
In such cases, it is recommended that the design be
conservative and that consideration be given to the use
of tee fittings or complete encirclement types of reinforcement.
(c) Adequate flexibility shall be provided in a small
line which branches from a large run, to accommodate
thermal expansion and other movements of thillarger
line (see para. 3 19.6).
'(d)If ribs, gussets, or clamps are used to stiffen the
branch connection, their areas cannot be counted as
contributing to the reinforcement area determined in
para. 3043.3(c) or33?4.3.4(f). However, ribs ,or gussets
may be used for pressure:strengthening a branch connection in lieu of reinfdrbment covered in paras. 304.3.3 and 304.3.4 ifthe design is qualified
. , as required by
para. 304.7.2.
(e) For branch connedtions whi
meet the
requirements, of para. 304.3.1(b), integral reinforcement, complete encirclement reinforcement, or other
means of reinforcement should be considered.
304.3.6 Branch Connections Under External Pressure. Pressure design for a branch connection subjected
to external pressure may be determined in accordance
with para. 304.3.1, using the reinforcement area requirement stated in para. 304.3.3(b).
