Sebastian Garcia Gerzon Ceja Period 2

Procedure Lab
Materials: The container with e unknown, salt, sand, and pepper Magnet Filter Paper Hot Plate Big Beaker Small Beaker Water Hot Plate

Objective: Separate the four substances. Procedures: 1. First you grab the magnet and move it around in the container with the four substances. The north side in the container its magnetic pole is stronger. This will separate the unknown. This tells you that the unknown is a type of metal. 2. Now for me the container with the three substances left, take a good amount (not all) and put it into the big beaker. Pour water into the beaker. This causes the sand to sink and the pepper to float. The salt will dissolve in the water. 3. Now make the filter paper into the cone shape and locate it in the small beaker. Pour the water through the filter paper. The pepper will stick to the filter paper and not go through. The sand will stay behind in the big beaker, and in the small beaker you are left with the slat water. 4. Put the small beaker on the hot plate. Put the dilator on 7(or higher your choice). This will evaporate the water and leave you with the salt. Dont evaporate the water completely because if you do the beaker may pop. So leave a little bit of water. Result Examples: Pepper Unknown Sand

The water didnt evaporate in time so I didnt take picture. Questions: What is the unknown? Why does the salt dissolve in water? Why does pepper float? Why does sand sink? What does this lab teach you?
