On a warm July day in 1861, two armies of a divided nation clashed for the first time on the fields overlooking the Bull Run River. As the battle raged on, soldiers on both sides were stunned by the violence and destruction they encountered. FUN FACT General P. G. T. Beauregards letter to General Joseph E. Johnston gave Rose ONeal Greenhow credit for brining him the military intelligence. *The letter stated that on the sixteenth of July, Greenhow supplied him with additional encoded information that contributed to the Union defeat at the First Manassas (First Battle of Bull Run). *Greenhow's information was presented to Jefferson Davis, and he immediately devised a plan to undermine McDowells advancement and dispatched Joseph Johnsons army from the Shenandoah Valley to Manassas.

* It was, in part, her involvement in July, 1861, that led to the belief that the war would be long and costly one.

What do you think happened to this structure?

As we know...with the election of Abraham Lincoln in 1860 and the attack on Fort Sumter, the nation was headed to war.
Most Northerners & Southerners believed the conflict would consist of one winner-takeall battle. Federal troops were enlisted for only 90 days, believing that would be more than enough time. After the First Battle of Bull Run (Manassas) The Union called for 500,000 volunteers to fight for the Union cause.

The Confederacy called for 400,000 volunteers.
