SPERMATOGENESIS:
• It is the process by which primitive
male gametes (spermatozoa)
become mature sperm.
Time required- 64 days
At puberty, spermatozoa begin to
actively divide under the influence of
Follicle stimulating hormone (FSH)
and continue throughout life.
CELL -STAGES IN
SPERMATOGENESIS:
• Spermatogonia(type A) or germ cell (44+X+Y) divide mitotically
to give rise to more spermatogonia of type A,and also to
spermatogonia of type B.

• Spermatogonia(typeB)(44+X+Y) enlarge, or undergo mitosis, to

form primary spermatocytes.

• Primary spermatocytes(44+X+y) divide to form two secondary

spermatocytes. This is the first meiotic division: it reduces the
number of chromosomes to half.

• Secondary Spermatocyte(22+X or 22+Y) Each secondary

spermatocyte divides to form two spermatids. This is the second
meiotic division and no reduction of chromosomes is seen.

• Spermatid(22+X or 22+Y)gradually changes it’s shape to

become a spermatozoon.(spermiogenesis)

MATURE SPERMATOZOON
A spermatozoon is a motile cell gamete.
It has shape like a tadpole. The
spermatozoon has head, a neck ,middle
piece and principle piece or tail. As a
whole mature spermatozoon has two
parts:
 Head:
The head of the human spermatozoon is
derived from the nucleus. The head is
covered by a cap-like structure called
the acrosome (enzyme-hyaluronidase).
 Tail: The tail is divided into
four parts.
Neck:
Cytoplasm and centriole where from
flagellum develops.
Middle piece:
It stores energy for motility.
Principle piece of tail.
End piece.

SURVIVAL=72 hours.
