Biology Essentials- Natural Selection Guided Viewing 1: Who was Charles Darwin? What is he famous for?

Charles Darwin was the 1st scientist helped discover evolution and natural selection. He is famous for creating a mechanism that helped evolution and natural selection. 2: What is evolution? It is the changes to a gene pool. 3: What is the gene pool? What are alleles? The combination of all genes in a population. Alleles are the variety of different population genes. 3: What is natural selection? What does it mean to have high fitness? When your physical attributes are chosen to be in the environment. To have high fitness is the ability to pass your genes on. 4: How do we get new characteristics in organisms? We get new characteristics by mutations. 5: How else do we get genetic variability (variety) in organisms? We get genetic variability by reproduction. 6: Explain the story of the Peppered Moth. How is this an example of natural selection? A Peppered Moth has two appearances, dark, which is dominant; and light, which is recessive. The light moth was able to be picked by natural selection because of the bird spotted the darker moth. This could happen vice versa. This is an example because natural selection happened , depending on the environment, to the moths. 7: What is the equation for Hardy-Weinberg Equilibrium? The equation is p2+2pq+q2= 8: What are adaptations? Adaptations are the process that a species goes through. 9: What is the best definition of natural selection? (explain.) Natural selection is the differential reproductive success. It means we are randomly made, and we can have a high fitness, allowing us to reproduce and pass on our genes; or we do not.
