SunWind Power Installs Wind Turbine for New School in Jefferson County

in KY for 2009-2010

With the start of the 2009-2010 school year, Jefferson County Public Schools (JCPS) is
opening a new school in southeastern Jefferson County named Ramsey Middle School. The
new state-of-the-art institution utilizes renewable energy technologies such as solar hot water
heating, natural lighting systems, and a wind turbine to boot. The new school is located on 46
acres at 6409 Gellhaus Lane. The wind turbine was purchased and installed by SunWind
Power Systems, a company located in southern Indiana that also supplies and designs other
renewable energy systems including solar PV. The wind turbine installed is a 1.9 kW
Skystream. On windy days, the turbine can help supply power for the school by converting
kinetic energy from the wind into electricity to be used by the school. On days the wind is not
blowing well, the utility will supply the electricity. Because the Skystream wind turbine does not
interfere with television reception, is extremely quiet, and cannot generally be heard over
typical background noise, it is ideal for the school. The installation was completed on August
9th, just in time before approximately 500 students from grades 6-8 walk through the doors for
the first time.
