Bill Honoring Slain Veteran Passes Senate
ColumbusToday, State Sen. Nina Turner (D-Cleveland) issued the following statement after the Ohio Senate voted 33-0 to pass Senate Bill 148, legislation that would designate the portion of I-271 running through Bedford Heights as the Army Pvt. Brandon Sloan Memorial Highway. A member of the 507th Maintenance Company, Pvt. Sloan was one of the first Northeast Ohioans slain in Operation Iraqi Freedom when his supply convoy was ambushed near Nasiriya, Iraq in March 2003. Today is a victory for all veterans, Senator Turner said. This memorial is the least we can do to honor Private Sloan and his family and to ensure that their sacrifice is never forgotten. I am proud to have joined my colleagues to pass this measure out of the Senate, and look forward to working with House members to continue moving this legislation forward. The bill, which is jointly sponsored with Senator Tom Patton (R-Strongsville), now awaits action from the Ohio House of Representatives.
