CHAPTER 4 CONCLUSION In this project, we have proposed techniques for optimizing the rate adaptation feature of modern CDMA

systems in a TCP aware fashion! "ur proposed system adapts its channe# rate in response to the TCP sending rate, a##owing it to trade off channe# rate and $%& in a TCP friend#y manner! $or the sing#e TCP session case, we deve#oped an ana#ytica# mode# for a two state system that e'p#icit#y accounts for the interaction (etween our proposed schedu#er and TCP dynamics as we## as the presence of two distinct regimes in terms of channe# rate, pac)et error pro(a(i#ity, and &TT! The mode# was uti#ized to show how to se#ect either error coding or processing gain in optimizing the rate adaptation scheme to improve TCP throughput! Improvements of *+ to ,- percent were o(served compared to a system that does not e'p#oit rate adaptation! $urthermore, we a#so eva#uated systems that use three channe# rates via simu#ations and o(served that they yie#d no significant gains compared to a two rate system! $ina##y, we e'tended the rate adaptation framewor) to mu#tip#e TCP sessions in a CDMA system! In such an environment, the num(er of high rate channe#s is #ess than the num(er of active users, and thus, the high rate channe#s must (e shared in a fair fashion! .e proposed two channe# a##ocation po#icies (ased on preemption and presented e'tensive simu#ation resu#ts on their performance! "ur resu#ts indicated that the rate adaptation feature with se#ected rate com(inations, rather than the channe# a##ocation po#icy, is affecting the system throughput! .e a#so showed that (y e'p#oiting statistica# mu#tip#e'ing gain, a system with just a few high rate channe#s achieves per session throughput c#ose to that of a sing#e session system with potentia# savings in (oth (andwidth and energy (udget!
