The Power of Unity

A house divided against itself cannot stand. This is what the great leader Abraham Lincol said in his address to the Illinois Republican Party upon accepting the nomination to the elections for the United States senate. He wanted to unite the state under only one leadership whichever was it. He eventually became president and fulfilled his dream of uniting the states. He managed to do many great deeds to his people, by taking decisions that closed the gaps between classes of people, like abolishing slavery. He was not the first, nor the last to use this phrase from the Bible, it was also used by some others. Sam Huston used it during the debate on the Compromise of 1850. Abigail Adams stated that the enemies build their hopes of subduing their foes upon the spaces that divide a nation. Even though this phrase was known to be true, the spaces between the people of the same nation, religion, creed or anything else lead to their decline. All the wars and conflicts started from the ones that were only pursuing their dreams, without helping his keen and sometimes going against them. Hitler used the division of his nation to seize power and he started the Second World War. This led up to a massacre that can still be felt within some peoples hearts. It doesnt mean that all the german people were cruel. Now, after more than sixty years after the war ended, Germany is one of the most powerful nations in the world, showing what power unification brings. Divide et impera is the strategy very commonly used to conquer something that united is impossible to defeat. This is very useful to be used in certain activities but when one uses this to divide his own country to gain power and achieve his own dreams while destroying others it leads up to very bad results. Even today there is a great division between the reach and the poor, which extends from people to communities and to states. Today the most powerful states in the world try to take the territory of some weaker states or their resources. This division will take on forever. We can never be equal to everyone, but the weaker ones can act as a team and overpower a stronger opponent.

If we look at politics we can see that some politicians use every trick possible to gain power for themselves, build on others hopes to gain their votes and after they are elected they ruin those dreams and just try to make more money. This ends up with the politician being cast aside by people.

Every dream we have can be built upon the help from others. By helping someone we get a great friend that in turn could help us to achieve our goals. No one said you cant do anything on your own but having a good friend beside can help to overcome an obstacle. This is what being a part of a group means. This is what standing united means. If we take for example a soccer team we can see exactly what team play means. If every player tried to score on their own the team would surely lose, but if they would play as a whole the game could be won easily. In conclusion unity leads to victory, as you can see from so many examples, whereas division and following your own goals only leads up to defeat. We, the Romanians, celebrate two Union Days. This and all that I have said before show the importance of unity and of course, its power.
