Our Class Accomplishments

The class has been working on some projects this month. In Science the students have been building a bridge out of spaghetti. The finished product will be displayed in the display case in the entry of the school by the middle of October so check them out! For our Language Arts class we have begun reading the book Underground to Canada by Barbara Smucker. It would be helpful if you could talk about the book at home as this story is talking about Black people being smuggled into Canada. Your children may have some questions about the story that need to be addressed. In our Physical Education class some of our students still need to bring their gym strip for class. Any short sleeved T-shirt will be suitable as long as it does not have any offensive pictures or words on it. Shorts need to have at least 4 to 6 inch leg length and made of fabric that is stretchy enough for your child to move freely. Please note that biking shorts are not suitable. This year we have a class mascot, a pet hedgehog named Pete. Students will take turns bringing him home during extended holidays like Christmas and Spring Break. They can sign up on the board in class and pick up instructions for his care so that they will know how much responsibility it is to take care of Pete. Our first art project is displayed in our classroom so peek in to see the creations that our students have come up with. A new program we have begun this year is our monthly class visits. Parents are able to visit during class time to observe the activities of the day. Our first class visit will be on the first Thursday of October. If you have a special skill that you would like to share with the class please make arrangements with me to demonstrate your skill to the class. Some of the ideas that have been discussed at the parent teacher introduction night were drawing or painting, helping with sewing projects, planting plants for our plant sale, and any baking activities are appreciated. Thank you to all the parents who helped with beginning of the year events. Your help was greatly appreciated by all of our school community. Laurie Zylstra grade 5
