    Trenches can kill people even when dug in supposedly "good" ground like clay. Nearly 80% of fatal trench accidents occurred in clay. Safety precautions like trench sheets or experienced supervision may not prevent accidents, as 75% of fatal accidents happened under experienced supervision and 74% occurred in trenches open for just minutes. Proper shoring or sloping of trench walls is needed to prevent the vast majority of trench deaths every year. All excavations must have sides supported or sloped based on a risk assessment.
