Lesson Essential Questions: Why is revenge considered an essential component of Hamlet? What motivates people to seek revenge? Can someone ever justify revenge? Objectives: Students will be able to: Analyze character development through dialogue Connect elements of theme and motif to characters Apply information from outside readings to discussion of current text Materials: Student copies of Hamlet, copies of Francis Bacon text, copies of articles on psychology of revenge Procedures: Warm up: Writing prompt: What motivates someone to get revenge? (Is revenge ever moral? Why or why not?) Connect to historical time religion vs. education Instruction: Break up students into six groups Each group will receive one of three articles on revenge Students will read silently and take notes In groups, they will make a list of answers to what is revenge/how is revenge defined and what are the causes/motivations behind revenge based on reading Make class poster with information from articles and quotes from text As a class, make a final list of Hamlets actions, behaviors, and thoughts related to revenge Are these examples similar or different from information in readings Do the readings add to your understanding of Hamlet Assessment: Participation in discussion; demonstration of reading and annotating texts Standards:
