Formative Assessment

The goal is to monitor student learning. Another goal is to provide feedback to students in order to improve their learning. They are used to help the teacher see where help is needed and address it quickly. These assessments generally have low or no point value. Examples include: Write a sentence to sum up today's lesson; Turn in a paper for feedback before the due date

Summative Assessment

The goal is to evaluate student learning. These assessments often have a high point value. Students are measured against a benchmark or a standard. Examples include: a senior presentation; a test at the end of a unit; a paper; a final project

Diagnostic Assessment

The goal is to provide information before a unit to see where students are. They provide a baseline to compare at the end of a unit. These assessments are used to adjust instruction for students' needs. Examples include: a pre-test in a Trophies basal reader; a final exam for a class given on the first day
