I am from PUNJAB, The land of Five

Rivers.
By darasbir
Punj + Aab means Five + Waters. The five rivers being
Jhelum, Ravee, Chinaab, Satluj and Beas. This alluvial plain is
one of the most fertile regions of the world.

Punjab’s history is as old as the history of the civilization

itself, the Harappan Civilization in 3000 BC was in Punjab
along with its sister civilization the Indus Valley Civilization.
This was the land where the great scriptures Ramayana and
Gita were written and this is the place where King Porous
stood and fought Alexander the Great.

Spiritually Punjab is also called the land of saints, gurus and

Pirs. From Sufi saints to Hindu saints to the Sikh Gurus all
were from the same land.

Punjab is also known as the “Granary of India” Or the “The

Bread Basket of India". It produces approx 70% of the food
grains for India (having a huge population of 1 Billion) when
it has less than 5 % of the land mass.

The people of Punjab also known as Punjabis are big hearted

people, they like to life king-size. They are loyal friends but
bitter enemies. Punjabis love nicer things of life, best cars,
big houses and comfortable lifestyle and for this they are
ready to work as hard or smart as possible. The initiative of
Punjabis is second to none. One Punjabi has created the
largest steel company on the planet. Another Punjabi has re-
defined the telecom world of India and is leading a change in
world-wide telecom.

Punjab has rich mix of religions Sikhs, Hindus, Muslims and

Christians. They may have different ways to pray and have
different places of worship but socially they are alike. They
live in every nook and corner of the world, from Australia to
Germany, from Fiji to Hono Lulu.

Punjabi Food is Rich. Tandoori chicken, butter chicken,

chicken Tikka Masala, and Bhatura chana are world famous.
Every city of the world must be having eateries serving
Punjabi Food.

Punjabi music, Bhangra, can make anyone dance. The drum

beats just lift one up. The music just transcends language. It
touches something very deep in us human beings which is
common to us all.

Punjab is a place which is open, lively prosperous. One poet

has said very rightly, the entire world has been against us
since times immemorial but there is something in us which
keeps us going against all odds.

I am a Punjabi and a proud one.
