Dane TALESKI
EUROPEANIZATION
OF NATIONAL POLITICAL
PARTIES
Abstract:
The studies of Europeaniza
tion of national political parties
are modest in numbers and in in
ferences that they report. They
mainly look at Europeanization as
a top-down process. These stud
ies are based on two institutionalist
approaches: (1) rational and (2) co
structivist, with political condition
ality as the causal mechanism of the
former and political socialization as
the causal mechanism of the latter.
However the results from this theo
retical distinction are overlapping
and are sometimes contradictory
to each other. In a first instance the
scope conditions under which Eu
ropeanization of political parties is
expected to happen need to be bet
ter specified. Secondly, and more
important, Europeanization of na
tional political parties should also
be seen as a bottom-up process.
Such an approach should encapsu
late the demand coming from ones
that are being Europeanizied,
even in countries that are only po
tential European Union Member
State.
