STEM Science, Technology, Engineering, and Math

For the month of December and January, students in grade two are learning about building a lever and finding out how a lever works. They will test a load and change location of the fulcrum and make comparisons. Students in grade one will use LEGOS to create walls and test their structures for strength. They will modify their design and retest their walls to see if their design can withstand various forces just like engineers. In grade three students will investigate rigid shapes and in teams of 2 create a simple model chair, and a drawbridge. Learning to following directions, work in a team and make decisions together to modify design will be an important engineering practice. In December the kindergarten children will learn and act out being NJ Winter Birds. They will learn about the ways birds use their beaks, what happens when they cant find food, and even try to get away from predators.
