It was shocking to see the news item in TIMES OF INDIA on Sept 19th 2009 under the
headline “Controversy hit VJTI loses its autonomy” and “VJTI is back under Mumbai
University Control”. It says a letter to that effect has been dispatched to the Institute on
Thursday.
With reference to this, I would like to clarify that no such letter has been received from
University till now (Sept 19th 2009, 1:00pm). As per the Government Resolution (GRNo.
WBP-2004/(341/04)/(2)/Technical Education – 6 dated 21st June 2004), VJTI has been
granted Autonomy by the State Government. As per the statutes on Autonomy since we
have already completed 5 years of autonomous status, University needs to send an expert
committee to review the work done by the institute during Autonomous status to take
appropriate steps of continuation of Autonomy or otherwise. Till this process is completed, it
is premature to say that VJTI loses its Autonomy.
VJTI website has displayed the achievements post Autonomy based on which we are
confident that we have performed at par with other Colleges that have been granted
Autonomy. I do not see any reason why the autonomy may not get renewal. All other
allegations that have been made in the particular news item have been looked into by
various committees at various levels and have been found to be baseless.
VJTI is and has been a reputed international institute and I am aware that this news
must have disturbed many. I urge all the concerned not to get disturbed with this news
item.
