The Article

In English we have 2 types of articles: Definite and the Indefinite Article. The absence of the article is called zero article. The Definite Article the is used for singular and plural forms and it presents a clear thing that you know, a concrete thing. Its form is the, and it has 2 types of pronunciation. It is pronounced [i] before the words which start with a vowel. For example: the apple; the egg; the interesting book; The second it is pronounced [e] before words that start with consonants. Ex: the book, the table, the chair The article is placed before the noun it defines, but if there is an attribute before the noun (adjective or ordinal numeral) the article is placed before the whole combination of words. For ex: the black pen, the first plan The Indefinite Article has two forms: a used before words which start with consonants. Ex: a pen, a book, a table an used before words which start with vowels. Ex. an office, an apple A noun with the indefinite article gives you the idea about the thing, which is not known. The indefinite article can only be used with nouns in singular because it results from numeral one. Ex. Send me a book. and Send me books.
