Houses have slopes!

Slope of a line
Notes 9 steps on how to find the slope of a line

Video Slope of a line

Consider the roofs of 3 houses

Steep 3 1 rise 1 run = 3 Steeper 3 2 rise 2 run = 3 4 Steepest 2

4 rise 2 run = 2 = 1

We call the steepness of the line its SLOPE The steeper the line the LARGER Positive Slope the slope.

Negative Slope

Up to the Right

Down to the Right

Formula to remember
Slope = y y xx
2 2 1 1

Example: (1,2) and (3,4)=

42 = 2 = 2

31 = 2

Example: (1,0) and (8,10)=

10 0 = 10 = 10

81=7

7
=3 7

Example: (-3,-6) and (4, -3)= -3 - -6 = 3

4 - -3 = 7

Calculate the slope.

S(-2,6)

rise -6 = - 3 = run 4 2

F(2,0) J(3,-2)
H(-3,-5)

rise 3 = 1 = run 6 2
