Answering

During the June holidays, Jason, his elder brother, Michael, and I went
camping in Malaysia. On our first night, we had a hair-raising encounter with an
alligator.
Cocooned in our sleeping bags, Jason and I were deep asleep, side-by-side
5

in our tent. Michael, the only adult among us, was sleeping in his own tent besides
ours.
Suddenly, the stillness of the night was disturbed by Michaels piercing
scream. Jason and I were instantly roused from our sleep. I scrambled out of my

10

sleeping bag while Jason grabbed his glasses and did the same.
I could hardly believe my eyes. An alligator was ripping up Michaels tent!
Quickly! Climb the nearest tree! Michael shouted while fending off the
alligator with a stout stick.

15

Jason and I ran for our dear lives and scrambled up the nearest tree. We
looked down but we could not see Michael below. There were too many branches.
After a few nervous moments, we saw Michael make his way up another tree
unscathed.

Perched on the tree branches, we watched the injured reptile crawl back into
a nearby swamp. We waited ten minutes before we scrambled down the tree,
grabbed our tents and ran to the safety of a rangers hut.
