Commissioning & Start Up for Process Engineers

Training Course
June 08-11, 2009 Doha, Qatar
The Qatar University Gas Processing Center in collaboration with Qatar Shell and Shell Global Solutions invites you to attend a 4 days intensive training on Commissioning & Start-Up for Process Engineers. This 4 days training course is divided into 2 sessions where session I will provide the basics of the commissioning and start up process and session II will be more advanced and focuses on some of the details of managing commissioning and start-up risks and assuring asset integrity. Course Overview: Successful commissioning and start up is key to the success of any investment project, since until a new asset is operating reliably, there is no return on investment. This course will train process engineers on executing major capital projects and gives an insight into the Operations Implementation and Flawless Start Up processes that were developed by Shell over the last 15 years and now applied worldwide. Session 1 will cover the following: o Enhance the basic competence of participants to prepare for and execute commissioning and start up o Help participants gain understanding of the general characteristics of plant commissioning and start up and the role of the process engineer o Participants will be introduced to the commissioning and start up work process as an integral part of Operations Implementation preparation, identify the critical success factors and define the roadmap to a successful commissioning and start up o Participants will gain an insight into the importance of planning at different stages of the project, the appropriate level of detail and useful tools and techniques to use o Risk Management will be introduced as a structured technique to gauge what can go wrong during CSU, and identify and plan effective mitigation measures o The particular challenges associated with managing HSE aspects of coincident construction, commissioning and start up activities (SIMOPS) will be covered, including a case study exercise Session 2 will cover the following: o Enhance the understanding of the participants of the importance of rolling out a Change Management program as an integral part of Flawless program; winning the hearts & minds of contractor and own staff o Deepening of the understanding of the importance of tightness management during construction and a detailed look at best practices for assuring internal and external tightness o Participants will gain a deeper insight into the importance of preservation and cleanliness during construction and how it should be managed o The importance of testing during commissioning and start-up, the theory of testing and a group exercise to develop a test plan o A detailed look at all elements of handover management and how to plan for it o The importance of independent cold eye reviews or Health Checks to monitor the progress of a Flawless program o All sessions will be highly interactive, giving participants as much hands-on experience as possible

The Qatar University Gas Processing Center (GPC) was launched in March of 2007 to be the main research center in the State of Qatar addressing challenges and opportunities in the field of gas processing. The Center enjoys an excellent relationship with local and international companies that have presence in Qatar. Its consortium has attracted major players in the gas industry. In addition to the research activities, the center is offering periodic technical training programs and is organizing an annual international symposium on gas processing starting January 2009. The Center is collaborating with world leading universities and institutes to provide the best quality training sessions. This training course is organized in collaboration with Qatar Shell and Shell Global Solutions, building on Shells worldwide experience in executing major capital projects. Shell is building two of the leading energy projects in the world in Ras Laffan Industrial City (RLIC). Qatar Petroleum (QP) and Shell launched the Pearl GTL project in July 2006. The project comprises the development of upstream gas production facilities as well as an onshore GTL plant that will produce 140,000 barrels per day of high quality GTL fuels and products along with 120,000 bpd of condensate, liquefied petroleum gas and ethane. Pearl GTL is not only the worlds largest integrated GTL project, but also the largest energy project ever launched within the borders of Qatar. The QP and Shell-sponsored Qatargas 4 LNG project includes the construction of a 7.8 million tones-per-annum LNG train.
