Stoker by Wentworth Miller 2013 and directed by Park Chan-wook

Initial likes: Stoker has a very strong story line with mystery, murder and plenty of unsettling emotions. It has elements of gothic, dark, strange and melancholy. Each scene has a deeper meaning almost like it has Freudian symbolism (the tensions between the mother and the uncle and the daughter and the uncle.)The Cinematography of stoker was done very well, there was a variety of shots and transitions used for example the continuity editing used in the beginning of the trailer where the father is playing with his daughter, wide shots are used to show the park as well as the characters, it elicited emotion and paternal closeness. The Music and sound effects used in stoker work really well the movie overall, the eerie music that begins with the beginning of the trailer demonstrates that the scene is a memory, one that the character remembering it, sees it as a positive memory. The sound effects of the scene where Indias friend attacks her, attempting to rape her and her uncle comes to the rescue, the fast paced music matches the action on screen very well. The acting of the actors and actresses worked really well within the movie as it was clearly noticeable that the mother, the uncle and India had a rather odd relationship.

Initial dislikes: This movie lacks subtlety as the mystery is far too obvious, the first appearance of the uncle clearly demonstrated that there was something wrong with him and the fact that he didnt go to the funeral of his brother implied that at some level he is to blame for the death which also arouses the suspicion that he killed him; this is also reiterated when the mother and the uncle become a couple as it shows that the uncle obviously wanted to be with the mother therefore he must have killed his brother to do so.
