Series 1 Episode 1
Written by Amelia Bullmore

Narrative
The drama is about a DCI Investigation that a detective named Susie is leading. They are
trying to find what has happened to a man who has been murdered and they are wondering
if an old case has anything to do with it . The old case brings back haunting memories for
detectives because it was that big of a case and no one has found out what really happened.
The narrative is single strand because there is only one storyline and that is trying to find out
who killed this man and why they did it. The narrative is linear because there are no
flashbacks in the drama, all of the scenes are from the present. Even though there are
scenes talking about previous cases we get no flashbacks of what exactly was happening.
The drama is an open narrative because the end scene is Susie interviewing someone she
says she doesnt know but then we find out they do know each other.

Sound Effects
At the beginning of the scene there is a sound of someone knocking at the door when Susie
is in her office. When Susie is trying to find out about these cases, she takes the files home
and finds Tommy Fenton's watch and there is a sound of her kissing it. Just before this there
is a sound of her hanging her coat up as she enters her house. Then when they hear new
information that someone knows who killed one of their suspects, they have to go to a prison
we then hear the sound of keys moving and the opening and closing of the cell door. Then
when Tommy Fenton’s old partner comes in for an interview he lights a cigarette and the
smoke alarm goes off and before this there is a sound of him lighting his cigarette. Then
when his partner arrives at the office there is the sound of footsteps as he enters the office.

Atmospheric sounds
At the beginning of the drama there is a sound of rain beating against the car that Susie is
sitting in; this run continues as she speaks. This creates a tense atmosphere in the car, as
she narrates who she is and what she does for a living. Then when they are in the office
there are sounds that you would normally hear like a phone ringing, a keyboard typing and
chatter in the background that just sets the scene of what is in the room. When Susie goes
into the prison there is an interview room that they enter and when they speak there is an
echo this creates a tense and realistic atmosphere for the audience. After each scene there
is a sound that indicates there at the end of the scene this just shows the audience that have
either moved location or moved to a different topic.

Characters
Susie is the main character of the drama as she is the narrator. She allows us an audience
to get to know her feelings about each case that is happening. As an audience they know
her feelings and whether she is hiding something. This brings more sense to the storyline
because we know whether she had anything to with the murder of DC Fenton. Also she
gives background information on the other characters in the drama, for example she talks
about their race. We find out that Susie comes across as strong as she is the only female in
the drama and everyone who she works with are males. So she has to be strong to make
sure she is in control of each case and as she is a DCI she has to boss everyone else
around. All of the other characters in the drama are all male and they all have a north west
accent. They all have a working class background. We get this impression because of the
way they speak and they all sound very down to earth. They all are strong headed people
who say what they are thinking and if they don't like how something is done they will tell
Susie. There is a mix between black and white people in the workplace, as Susie's working
partner is black but all the rest of the people are white who we are introduced to.

Music
There is a theme tune at the beginning and the end of the drama, it is a piano based song.
The song is written by a famous North west band that links to the drama because everyone
who is in it is from the North West. At the beginning of the drama the music fades in and at
the end of the drama the music fades out after it is left on a cliffhanger.
