Facts about gold


The name is the Anglo-Saxon word for the metal and the symbol comes from the Latin aurum, gold. It was discovered about 3000 BC. Its chemical symbol is Au. It is a good conductor of electricity and heat. Gold is malleable enough for just 1 gram to be hammered into a sheet 1 square meter in size. It can also be made so thin that it appears transparent. Its boiling point is 1064 oC and melts at 2836 oC.
