Mallory (Burger) Pate Dr. Bailey M452 Lesson Plan #8: Introduction to Thesis Statements

Goals:

Students will compose a strong research paper using MLA format

Objectives: Given introductory materials, students will identify strong thesis statements Students will demonstrate their understanding of thesis statements by creating thesis statements for their own topics CCSS.ELA-Literacy.W.9-10.7

Standards:

Introduction: The class period will begin with questions from previous day being answered (student names will remain anonymous). Procedure: 1. Pull up the KY Virtual Library graphic on the smart board and review the overall process of creating a research paper. 2. Explain the purpose of a thesis statement and display example on the smart board. 3. Pass out thesis statements presentation handout for partner discussion. Students will spend 6 7 minutes with an elbow partner discussing the remaining practice exercises. Answers will not be provided at this time. 4. Following the partner discussion, review examples listed in the handout with answers displayed on the smart board. 5. Students should be given approximately 3 minutes to journal their thoughts on thesis statements as a time of processing the information. 6. Following the journaling exercise, students will submit 1 example each of a strong thesis statement and a weak thesis statement for their topic to be turned in by the end of class. Evaluation: Students will create a thesis statement for their own topic.
