Mallory (Burger) Pate Dr. Bailey M452 Lesson Plan #4: Introduction to Finding and Citing Credible Sources Goals: Students will compose a strong research paper using MLA format

Objectives: Students will compare different websites to evaluate which may be stronger for their later use Students will demonstrate their understanding of credible sources by end of class period

Standards: CCSS.ELA-Literacy.W.9-10.8 Gather relevant information from multiple authoritative print and digital sources, using advanced searches effectively; assess the usefulness of each source in answering the research question; integrate information into the text selectively to maintain the flow of ideas, avoiding plagiarism and following a standard format for citation. CCSS.ELA-Literacy.SL.9-10.2 Integrate multiple sources of information presented in diverse media or formats (e.g., visually, quantitatively, orally) evaluating the credibility and accuracy of each source. Introduction: Review time spent in the media center by brief class discussion. Procedure: 1. Bring up KY Virtual Library graphic and discuss unit expectations. 2. Pass out document on sites to use for searching material (have students open Chrome books to prepare for the in-class assignment). 3. Instruct students to look up facts on bullying. 4. Students should find 3 different facts about this sample topic from 3 different source types based on handout. Students should write these down on a separate sheet of paper. 5. Discuss student results and show the difference between credible sites and unreliable sites. Following this exercise, collect the assignment for evaluation.

6. Introduce students to Purdue Owl for guidance in properly citing sources using MLA format. This is to prepare them for the upcoming time in the Media Center where they begin their preliminary research. Evaluation: Students will obtain 3 facts on bullying using 3 separate websites to compare the credibility of each site. At the end of the period, results of in-class research will be collected.
