CNA: REAL-TIME BULK ANALYSERS For Stock Pile, Raw Mix & Coal

ABSTRACT: The demand for cement has been growing at a good pace. For the

production of high quality cement, it is very much essential to have the raw materials (Lime Stone etc.) of right quality in the right proportion. Similarly for quality monitoring of coal used in kiln firing and captive power plants, it is of paramount importance to know the Calorific Value, proportions of volatile matter, moisture and ash content (proximate and ultimate analysis). With conventional techniques it has been difficult to monitor the proportions of the constituents on bulk basis without haltering the production process. Moreover, the existing techniques need a site specific calibration and have high CO2 emission cost. An innovative neutron based technology has been discussed in this paper which enables rapid real-time measurement of chemical composition of raw materials for bulk quantities. Unlike the existing surface techniques, in this technology, the radiations penetrate the whole material and give more precise and consistent values for measurements. Furthermore, the technology does not need separate sampling of material for analysis. Instead, continuous measurement of material moving on a conveyor belt has been made possible 252 with this technology. Compared to the old Cf based technique, this technology not only prevents prolonged exposure to harmful radiations but also eliminates the hassle of repeated periodic recalibrations and adjustments resulting out of constant radioactive source (Cf252) decay.
