Homework #1
Due Date: January 28, 2014

Semester II 2013/14

The following problems are intended to get you warmed up for some of the topics we will cover this semester. This is not an exam so feel free to consult any math text if you are unsure of how to solve some of the problems. Show all of your work to receive credit. 1. Convert 179.01E to radians and show the formula you used to obtain the answer.

2. Convert

radians to degrees and show the formula you used.

3. Sketch the trigonometric functions sin(), cos() and tan() for -## on separate graphs. Label both axes on your graph to indicate where maximums and minimums occur. Use the graph paper provided. 4. A machine gun shoots bullets at a rate of 200 per minute. If the bullets velocity is 900 meters per second, how many meters apart are the bullets when they are fired in a straight line?

5. Solve the following system of equations for x, y and z. Show all of your work and write your answers to 4 places right of the decimal point. Using a calculator and just writing the answers below is not sufficient for credit.

6. Write down the prime numbers between 40 and 65.

7. Consider triangle ABC in Figure 1. Compute the length of line

Figure 1. Triangle ABC

8. Find the height of triangle DEF shown in Figure 2.

Figure 2. Triangle DEF

9. Solve for x in the equation 9.7x=330.121. Show your answer to 4 decimal places and indicate how you got that answer. Saying ``That's what the calculator gave me'' is not enough. Give a short answer on how to find x if you did not have a calculator. (HINT: Use some of the properties of logarithms.)

10. You are walking down a road to see someone who lives with a tribe called the ``Truthful People''. There is a branch in the road you are on and down one direction lives the ``Truthful People'' and down the other direction lives the tribe called the ``Lying People''. There is a guard posted at the junction representing one of the tribes but you do not know which one. If he is from the Truthful tribe, then he always tells the truth. If he is from the other tribe, he always lies. What one question would you ask this character in order to get pointed to the correct tribe? You will go in which ever direction he points. Back up your answer with a 3-4 sentence explanation of the combinations of directions considering lies and truths.

11. The following exercises concern complex numbers. Recall that following computations (show your work): a. (3.4 + 4.5i) + (-1.2 + 3.3i) =

. Perform the

b. (4.9 - 7.1i) - (2.2 + 2.1i) =

c. (4.5 + 1.2i)(3.4 + 1.1i) =

d.

12. Refer to Figure 3. The triangle shown has sides of equal length 1. If you divide each side into thirds and make smaller triangles which are also equilateral, what is the perimeter and area of this new shape? HINT: The original triangle is completely contained within the new shape. Show your work.

13. A plane takes off from an airport and climbs to 7500m altitude at a rate of 1500 m/min. Once it gets near the destination airport, it descends from 7500m at a rate of 1000m/min and lands. The plane uses 500 liters per minute of fuel during the climb, 400 liters per minute during level flight and 100 liters per minute of fuel during decent. If the total flight time was 62 minutes, how much fuel was consumed?

14. Graph y = log x and y = ex on separate graphs for 0.0 # x # 10.0. Use the graph paper provided.

15. U2 is a music group that has four people in it; Bono, Edge, Adam and Larry. U2 has a concert that starts in 17 minutes and they must all cross a bridge to get there. All four men begin on the same side of the bridge. It is night. There is one flashlight. A maximum of two people can cross at one time. Any party who crosses, either 1 or 2 people, must have the flashlight with them. The flashlight must be walked back and forth, it can not be thrown, etc. Each band member walks at a different speed. A pair must walk together at the same rate of the slower man's pace. Bono: 1 minute to cross Edge: 2 minutes to cross Adam: 5 minutes to cross Larry: 10 minutes to cross For example: If Bono and Larry walk across first, 10 minutes have elapsed when they get to the other side of the bridge. If Larry then returns with the flashlight, a total of 20 minutes have passed and you have failed the mission. Find the right order of people to go back and forth over the bridge. Account for the total time used to show that your solution gets everyone over the bridge in 17 minutes. Notes: There is no trick behind this. It is the simple movement of resources in the appropriate order. There are two known answers to this problem.

16. The top picture in Figure 4. shows the upper half of a circle of radius 2. The subsequent 3 pictures show the semi-circle subdivided into 2, 4, and 8 pieces. Adding the areas bounded by the thicker lines gives an approximation of the area of the semi-circle. The more pieces the semi-circle is divided into, the more accurate the area approximation. Compute the approximate area for each of the three cases and compute the amount of error in the approximation when compared to the exact area of the semi-circle. The error will be computed by

17. Find the roots of the following three quadratic equations: a. x2 + 3x - 2 = 0 b. x2 - x - 12 = 0 c. x2 + 225 = 0 Use the quadratic formula:

18. Find an expression for V:

19. Solve for V (there are two roots):

20. A plane flying at an altitude of 10000 meters is approaching an airport runway that is 25 kilometers away. Compute the descent angle in degrees in order for the plane to touch down at the end of the runway. Reference the angle from the horizontal and assume that the airport is at sea level.
