Mindtool Activity PowerPoint Review Game Lesson Plan 6th Grade Mathematics Title/Information Area and Volume Review

iew Game PowerPoint 60 students Common Core Standards CCGPS.M.6.G.1 - Find the area of right triangles, other triangles, special quadrilaterals, and polygons by composing into rectangles or decomposing into triangles and other shapes; apply these techniques in the context of solving real-world and mathematical problems. CCGPS.M.6.G.2 - Find the volume of a right rectangular prism with fractional edge lengths by packing it with unit cubes of the appropriate unit fraction edge lengths, and show that the volume is the same as would be found by multiplying the edge lengths of the prism. Apply the formulas V = l w h and V = b h to find volumes of right rectangular prisms with fractional edge lengths in the context of solving real-world and mathematical problems. CCGPS.M.6.G.4 - Represent three-dimensional figures using nets made up of rectangles and triangles, and use the nets to find the surface area of these figures. Apply these techniques in the context of solving real-world and mathematical problems. Essential Question What strategies, properties of shapes, and formulas must I know in order to find the area, surface area, and volume of figures? Learning Objective (A) The student will be able to (B) select significant information from throughout the unit in order to create an interactive PowerPoint game (C) given a specific rubric (D) while achieving a score of 70% or better. Instructional Framework Warm up and copy in agenda Brainstorm as a class what we identify as critical information to the unit Make a class concept map to help organize thoughts Introduce and discuss the review game assignment Model for students an example project completed by the teacher Give a brief tutorial of how to create a PowerPoint game (have students write down at least ten important things from the mini-lesson that can be used to help them when creating their game) Discuss how to work successfully with partners Explain the rubric used for grading Go over rules and expectations of technology use Work on projects Materials Technology (i.e. computer lab, iPads, laptops, etc) Any reference materials Internet connection Learning Strategies

Engage Students will be engaged since this is a partner/small group activity and since they are using technology. Elicit I will elicit information at the beginning of the lesson by requesting that students differentiate between information from the area and volume unit to determine the most important items. We will brainstorm a list as a class and make a class concept map. Explore Students will explore their own learning by determining what are good, accurate, fair, and challenging questions to include in their review games. Explain Students will be expected to explain their understanding of the material by selecting or writing good quality questions. Elaborate Students will be expected to go beyond the typical questions and choose items that require higher order thinking skills. Evaluate Students will be able to self-evaluate their work by using the rubric as a guide during the work period. Students will be formally graded by the teacher at the completion of the assignment using the same rubric. Extend Students will be challenged to extend their knowledge of the topics in order to determine what questions will be appropriate yet challenging for their peers. Assessment for Learning Successful completion of review game PowerPoint in accordance with the associated rubric. Differentiation Those who finish early will be asked to add more bells and whistles to their presentations including sound effects, more slide transitions, external links to content, etc. DOK Level Level 4 Students are designing, connecting, applying concepts, and creating. Homework Finish project by the assigned due date.
