Pythagorean Theorem Choiceboard

Description
This chocieboard is to be used in the middle of the Pythagorean Theorem unit. It is meant to
reinforce knowledge, and expand the knowledge into more specific applications and real world
scenarios. Student have three choices. They can do the digital activities in BrainPOP, Flocabulary, or
Khan Academy. No matter what option they chose, then will finish the choice board with a minimum
one paragraph, 300 word reflection about what they learned. This choiceboard will be followed by a
class-wide Socratic Seminar so student can share what they learned with their classmates. Students who
are higher achieving will be encouraged to complete more than a single option.
This choiceboard will be worth 50 points and will be applied to the formative assessment
category for their overall grades. If students chose to complete more than a single option, they will
receive a maximum of 25 bonus points per extra choice, but only if their selections are fully completed.
Within this choiceboard, all choices will include the following levels of student thinking: Depth
Of Knowledge level 1 (recall), level 2 (skills and concepts), and level 3 (strategic thinking). The common
core standards covered in this choiceboard are 8.G.B.6 - Explain a proof of the Pythagorean Theorem
and its converse, 8.G.B.7 - Apply the Pythagorean Theorem to determine unknown side lengths in right
triangles in real-world and mathematical problems in two and three dimensions, and 8.G.B.8 - Apply the
Pythagorean Theorem to find the distance between two points in a coordinate system.
The ISTE Standards for Students being addressed in this activity are 1a, 3c, 5a, and 7c. In these
four standards match my choiceboard because in my choice board, students are using technology to set
and understand their learning goals, curate information to help accomplish their goals, use that
information to better understand and solve problems involving the Pythagorean Theorem, and share
their findings with their classmates. This project is designed to help them build their technology skills in
these four standards. The choiceboard is not designed to test their abilities in these standards.
 1a. Students articulate and set personal learning goals, develop strategies leveraging technology
to achieve them and reflect on the learning process itself to improve learning outcomes.
 3c. Students curate information from digital resources using a variety of tools and methods to
create collections of artifacts that demonstrate meaningful connections or conclusions.
 5a. Students formulate problem definitions suited for technology-assisted methods such as data
analysis, abstract models and algorithmic thinking in exploring and finding solutions.
 7c. Students contribute constructively to project teams, assuming various roles and
responsibilities to work effectively toward a common goal.
Choiceboard Instructions
Learning Goal: In this activity, you will continue to learn about the Pythagorean Theorem, reinforcing
your prior knowledge of the theorem, and learning about real world applications that use the
Pythagorean Theorem. This will all be done with the online resource BrainPOP.
Instructions:
1. Go to Google Classroom and open the assignment “Pythagorean Theorem Choiceboard
Reflection.” You should have your reflection open, answering the questions as you complete the
choiceboard assignment. The reflection is formatted as a Google Form.
