Instructional Planning Grid

1. TEKS 112.34.c.4.A
Student is expected to compare and contrast prokaryotic and eukaryotic cells.

2. Big Understanding
Know how to classify cells and organisms.

Objective
Distinguish between prokaryotic and eukaryotic cells.

3. Assessment Evidence
Students will have chance to show understanding twice. First, as class while I guide them through drawing the two cell types. Second, in groups they form the two types of cells using random objects.

4. Opening Hook
I will first show the students a six minute video that shows animations of prokaryotes and eukaryotes.

5. Instructional Strategies/Activities
After video is played and I've gone through a short PP, I will help students draw the two types of cells. To make the drawing, I will ask them to tell me which parts belong where to check for initial understanding. Once we're done drawing, students will break into groups of 4. Each group will be given a bin with random objects in it, and they will have to form both types of cell using the different objects and present them when done.

6. Materials/Resources
Video - https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=o1GQyciJaTA PP presentation Pieces of paper/pens or pencils Bins of random objects

7. Grouping Patterns
Work in heterogenous groups of 4 to make both types of cells with the random objects in their bins.

8. Ending, Summary/Reflection
Why is it important to know about cell types? Which type of cell do you think there are more of in the world?
