The Students will analyze the impact of the passage of the 17th amendment.

;<=:"#)>: :

1 . The students describe what the 17th amendment does. 2. The students explain why the 17th amendment was ratified. 3. The students analyze how the 17th amendment has changed the political landscape

The 17th amendment was ratified during the United States' "progressive era" and has had an enormous impact on the modern political landscape. Today many Americans take its importance for granted, and many others find the idea of repealing the 17th amendment anti-democratic. However with an increasingly vocal minority voicing support for the amendment's repeal, it is critical to revisit why the 17th amendment was ratified, and why it is important today.

Before the lesson begins, the students will complete a warm-up activity by filling out what they already know, and what they want to learn about the 17th amendment in the appropriate columns of a KWL chart. At the conclusion of the lesson, the students will fill out the last column of their KWL chart which will be used as a formative assessment to gauge the students' understanding of the material. Additionally, students will receive a daily grade for their participation in the 17th amendment classroom debate.

What if I told you that the current Governor, Lieutenant Governor, and junior Senator from Texas have expressed their interest in stripping citizens of their ability to vote for United States Senators? (Well they all have!) What if I told you that the founding fathers agreed with them? (They did!) Why would they do this, and why do some people support this? Isn't democracy a good thing? What about federalism?
