CHEE 3544: Assignment 3 Problem 1

a) The special behaviour which the acetone-chloroform system exhibits, is the formation of an azeotrope. This can be seen near the peak of the data points where the two separate lines no longer become distinguishable. c) The !"# model does not resemble the experimental data points in both the Txy and xy graphs$ however, the %ilson and &!T' models are much more representative of the experimental data. The &!T' model would be the more useful model to use because in the conditions present in the experiment, there is a possibility that both acetone and chloroform will exist in the li(uid phase at the same time. Two li(uid phases means that the %ilson e(uation should not be used. Problem 2 a) The reaction takes place in the gas phase. The reaction taking place and the use of a packed bed reactor suggest that the process is happening in the gas phase. b)

c)

A temperature of )*+.,5 degrees C gives an overall conversion of ,-..

d)

A reactor volume of ).,/ m3 gives an overall conversion of ,-.. e)

Through adiabatic operation, a higher temperature is needed to reach the same rate of conversion$ however, a lower reactor volume can be used. The maintenance of this higher temperature 0approximately *-- degrees higher than the isothermal operation looked at previously) could be expensive, and therefore adiabatic operation is likely not appropriate for this reaction.

f)

The plot above is the overall conversion vs the inlet temperature to the reactor. This plot shows that as the inlet temperature increases, the overall conversion also increases until around a maximum temperature of 3)5 degrees C, after which there is no longer an increase in the overall reaction. 1f we consider the plot previous to this, where the effluent temperature was monitored. at an inlet temperature of )5- degrees, the reaction never reaches *--. conversion. !eaching an *--. is unrealistic, but the plot above demonstrates that choosing a higher inlet temperature will increase the reaction yield.
