Lesson Title: ___Math with two and three digit numbers________

Objectives

Students will be able to calculate two and three digit numbers by using pencil and paper, a calculator, and base ten blocks. Students will be able to explain how they set up the math problem and solved it by showing their work for every problem or by writing two or more sentences on how they received their answer. Students will apply proper usage of addition and subtraction methods by using all three methods, paper and pencil, a calculator, and base ten blocks.

Anticipatory Set

To start off the lesson I will have the students complete addition and subtraction time cards of one digit problems. They will receive four minutes to complete each card. They are to complete the cards as fast as they can in the four minutes given. After the students have had completed both cards, the students will be asked to move to the meeting area. At the meeting area the students will be taught how to use base ten blocks for adding and subtracting two and three digit numbers. A few students will be able to come up to the board and work with the website. Students will be able to add and subtract two and three digit numbers using multiple different methods. The teacher will ask the students what they know about addition and then what they know about adding two and three digit numbers. The teacher will write the answers on the white board. Next the teacher will ask the students what they know about subtraction and then asking what they know about subtracting two and three digit numbers, writing all answers on the board. The teacher will then ask the students if they know how to use a calculator, writing their answer on the board as well. The teacher will model on the board how to add and subtract two and three digit numbers using paper and pencil. The teacher will create three problems for addition and three problems for subtraction. The teacher will solve the first problems, then asking the students to solve the rest in a notebook. The teacher

will ask four different students to go to the board and solve the problems while everyone follows along. The teacher will then model how to use a calculator for the same problems written on the board. This can help the students know how to check their answers. Then the teacher will show how to use base ten blocks to solve those same problems. The teacher will walk around the classroom observing the students as they solve the problems given to the class. The teacher should make sure to ask each group of desks if they are understanding or have any questions. The teacher should allow for the opportunity for the students to approach him or her to ask questions or correct any mistakes. Students will complete addition and subtraction problems as a class. The teacher will designate three problems the students are to use pencil and paper and three different problems students are to use base ten blocks to solve. Students will use a calculator to check their work. Students will be asked to work in groups and with stations to complete 20 problems given from their math books. There will be five stations for the students to rotate from. One station is where the students will use base ten blocks to solve five problems of the twenty. The second station is where the students will use pencil and paper to solve five different problems than before. The third station is where the students will use a calculator to check all their answers they have solved so far and to complete five questions using a calculator. The fourth station is working with the teacher at a table to solve five

problems. Here the students get more one on one attention from the teacher. The teacher can also answer and questions or confusions the students may have. The fifth and final station is where the students will play math games on www.ABCya.com that are addition and subtraction only. To end the lesson, the students will meet in the meeting area again. Every student will get a chance to solve two problems, addition and subtraction, using the method of their choice of either base ten blocks or pencil and paper. The student will then use a calculator to check their work. If the student chooses to use base ten they can choose to use the base ten block website or the actual base ten blocks. If the student chooses to use pencil and paper they can use the Smartboard/Promethean board to show the class and the teacher how they work out the problem. Having each student choose their method allows the student to do what is comfortable for them and what helps them learn best. Also, having the students solve their problems can help the teacher check for understanding and also use it as a formal assessment.
