    River training in Europe were aimed to improve navigable rivers. Training of river by embankments to confine the flow within a single deep channel to carry sediment burden had been practised on the Yellow River, China.

    Basic purpose of river training: to stabilize channel along certain alignment with certain cross-section for one or more objectives:
    Safe and expeditious passage of flood flow Efficient transportation of suspended bed load Stable river course with minimum bank erosion Sufficient depth and good course for navigation Direction of flow through a certain defined stretch of the river
