Multimeter, or people usually call AVOmeter is an electrical measuring instruments that combines several measurement functions in one unit.

It can measure the voltage, current and resistance. The first Avometer was made in Britain, by the Automatic Coil Winder and Electrical Equipment Company in 1923, and measured direct current only. The multimeter is often called simply an AVO, because the company logo carries the first letters of 'amperes', 'volts' and 'ohms'. It was conceived by the Post Office engineer Donald Macadie in 1923. There are 2 types of multimeter : First, Analog instruments, are usually based on a microammeter whose pointer moves over a scale calibrated for all the different measurements that can be made Second, Digital instruments usually display digits, but may display a bar of a length proportional to the quantity being measured Digital multimeters have all but replaced analog moving coil multimeters in most situations. Analog multimeters are still manufactured but by few manufacturers. The digital Multimeter more accurate than analog multimeter. A multimeter can be a hand-held device useful for basic fault finding and field service work, or a bench instrument which can measure to a very high degree of accuracy. They can be used to troubleshoot electrical problems in a wide array of industrial and household devices, such as electronic equipment, motor controls, domestic appliances, power supplies, and wiring systems. Multimeters are available in a wide range of features and prices. Cheap multimeters can cost less than ten US dollars, while the top of the line multimeters can cost more than five thousand us dollars.
