 Types of meter:
There are seven types of electricity meter:
● Standard meters.
● Dial meters.
● Digital meters.
● Variable-rate meters.
● Prepayment meters.
● Smart meters.

The purpose of a meter:

Your electric meter is the device responsible for measuring
your electricity consumption. It is connected to the house's
electricity network and records how much electricity you
use.

H ow a meter works:
The standard electric meter is a clock-like device that
records the amount of electricity you use. As your home
draws electricity from the power lines, a set of small gears
inside the meter move. The number of revolutions are
recorded by the dials that you see when you look at your
meter.

 Standard meters

These show your energy usage in kilowatt hours (kWh) using

a simple mechanical display. It's easy to take a reading – just
make a note of the black numbers, reading from left to right.
There might also be red numbers.

Dial meter
After following the meter reading instructions, the meter
reading you would give to your supplier is 1 5 6 4 9. An
electricity dial meter has 5 or more dials. They each turn to
point to a number between 0 and 9. Each dial on your meter
will turn in the opposite direction to the ones next to it.

Digital meter
Digital meters, sometimes called “smart meters” or “advanced
meters,” are devices that automatically record electric and
water use, then electronically report that information to the
utility company at regular intervals. These meters provide
secure data that can show peak usage and isolate outages.

 Variable rate meters

If you have a time-of-use tariff, you'll have a variable rate

meter, which will record two separate figures for your
electricity use: one for on-peak consumption and one for your
discounted off-peak consumption.

Prepayment meters
A prepayment meter is a type of domestic energy meter that
lets you pay for energy before you use it. This type of meter is
also known as a pay-as-you-go meter. Prepayment meters
offer flexibility, allowing you to pay money when you choose
instead of paying a monthly bill.

Smart meter
A smart meter measures your gas or electricity use, just like a
traditional meter. But unlike a traditional meter, a smart meter sends
its readings to your supplier automatically. Once your smart meters
are installed, you won't need to read your gas and electricity meters
any more.

Ringless meter socket

The ring type meter cover has a formed rim on the cover which works
with a sealing ring to directly seal the meter in place. The ringless type

the meter in place and the cover can be sealed or padlocked with the
hasp on the cover.

 What’s a meter socket:
A meter socket is a type of outdoors electrical socket that
connects a watt-hour meter, or electrical meter, to a house.
These are the meters outside houses, commercial buildings
and construction sites that measure the amount of power
used so the supplier knows what to charge.

Types of meter socket:

Electrical meter socket enclosures are classified in one of two
categories; ring or ringless. Although the ring and ringless
styles perform the same function, metering electricity, there
are some physical distinctions between the two.
