ELECTRICITY METER

WHAT IS ELECTRICITY METER?

 Electricity Meter – also known as electric meter,
electrical meter or energy meter is a device that measures
the amount of electric energy consumed by a building,
tenant space, or electrically powered equipment.
USE
 Electric utilities use electric meters installed at
customers’ premises to measure electric energy delivered
to their customers for billing purposes. They are
typically calibrated in billing units , the most common
one being the kilowatt-hour (kWh). They are usually
read once each billing period.
 The most common unit measurement on the electricity
meter is the kilowatt-hour (kWh).
TYPES OF ELECTRICITY METER

 Electricity Flat-rate Meter

 Electricity Interval Meter

 Solar Meter
ELECTRICITY FLAT-RATE METER
 Also known as an ‘accumulation meter’, these types of
meters record your electricity consumption since the
meter was first installed (or last reset).
 You will be billed based on differences between
consecutive readings. In other words, by comparing the
most recent reading by the one before it.

HOW TO READ ELECTRICITY FLAT-
RATE METER
 There are three types of accumulation meter display (pictured above left to
right) – Cyclometer display, dial display and digital display. The digital
and cyclometer displays are easy to read – the display simply shows how
much electricity has been used (kWh).
 Dial accumulation meters are slightly more confusing. They have five small
dials with numbers 0 to 9. From left to right, read the numbers the dial
hands fall on. If the hand falls between two numbers, then take the lowest
number (unless it falls between 0 and 9, write down 9).

ELECTRICITY INTERVAL METER
 Interval meters are more advanced than traditional types
such as flat-rate meters. Rather than measuring data
electromagnetically (that is, with a traditional spinning
disc) they record data electronically. They are called
‘interval meters’ as they can record energy use in half
hour intervals. They often have a digital display.

ELECTRICITY SMART METER
 Also commonly known as ‘digital meters’,
are the latest in energy metering
technology. Similar to interval meters,
they record electricity usage in 30 minute
intervals allowing different rates to be
charged at different times of day.

SOLAR METER
 If you’ve installed a solar PV
system or storage battery then you will
need a two-way or bidirectional electricity
meter that can measure both incoming
electricity and solar electricity being
exported to the grid in exchange for
a feed-in tariff.
