Multimeter, Clamp Meter, and their parameters

Multimeter
Multimeter, also called a volt-ohm meter, is a handheld testing device used by electricians
to take measurements and detect faults. Multimeters can potentially measure the following
quantities:

 Alternating Current and Voltage

 Direct Current and Voltage
 Resistance
 Capacitance
 Conductance
 Inductance
 Frequency
The multimeter functions by two leads: red and black. Black lead is inserted in the common
port of multimeter and the red lead in the other port (depending on the function to be
used). The knob of the multimeter is used to select the function and range to be used. The
pointed metal ends of each lead are brought in contact with the wires or terminals, and the
value can be read from the multimeter.
Clamp on meter
A Clamp meter is an electrical testing tool that jointly functions as a digital multimeter and a
current sensor. The clamp on meter can measure all basic quantitates that a multimeter can
measure, the current is measured using the clamp and other quantities are measured by the
probes. The jaws of the meter are clamped around the wire, or conductor, in an electrical
system and the value of current appears on the screen.
The jaws of clamp meter are made of ferrite iron that detect and measure the magnetic
field generated by the current. The clamp meter is generally used to measure current on
industrial equipment where high levels of current flow.
