TUESDAY WITH MORRIE

Written by : Mitch Albom

Author’s Background
The Author of this book , Mitch Albom , began his career in journalism as a sports
columnist for Detroit Free press, apart from Tuesday with Morrie which is perhaps his
greatest work,he has wrote other notable books as well,Five People in Heaven, Have
a little faith, For one more day,to name a few of his famous works, Combining all his
works, his books have sold over 39 million copies.

Reason behind the Book’s title

The Author of this book has a special connection behind the name of this book, his sociology
professor Morrie Schwartz used to have his course class with his students(the author included)
on Tuesdays but most notably sixteen years after the Author’s graduation ,he and morrie would
catch up every Tuesday but these Tuesdays would have a far lasting effect on the author than
any regular Tuesdays with Professor morrie the author Mitch used to have sixteen years earlier.

Synopsis
Tuesday with morrie is basically a recount of the Author Mitch Albom with his old Sociology
teacher sixteen years after his graduation , In unfavorable circumstances Morrie Schwartz is
diagnosed with ALS in his late 70s .When Mitch comes to know about his teacher’s terminal
disease ,he flies down to newton massachusetts to reconnect with Morrie every Tuesdays as
Morrie used to say “ We are Tuesdays people Mitch”, but these Tuesdays will have a far
outreaching effect than the regular course Tuesdays 16 years back.

My perspective
The story of this book recounts the author’s on and forth conversations with his college
professor who during these 13 Tuesdays would prove to be a guiding mentor for the author .In
my perspective this book packs emotions, general message for the readers, all in all this book in
a beautiful masterstroke and general move encompasses audience of every age category
therefore making the book relatable down to the last reader.Morrie Schwartz who has
contracted ALS in his late seventies.Mr morrie born to a Russian-jewish immigrant father
Charlie from whom he never received the fatherly leave a child is owed .Morrie lost his mother
when he was eight and saw his own brother succumb to polio. In my opnion all these childhood
traumas had made Morrie the person he was when he was diagnosed with ALS to the point he
isn’t afraid of his terminal condition rather he accepts his woes and accepts his inevitable faith
as Morrie is quoted to have said “Love is how you stay alive” or a more prudent approach
“Love each other or perish”.

Basically the spiritual fatherly-son relation between morrie and the author Mitch and the
eventual transcend from being his college teacher to his eventual spiritual guide and mentor, is
what flabbergasted me the most about this book.Morrie in these 13 Tuesday session instills and
implores in the author the true purpose of life and its meaning as he says to Mitch “People
Haven’t found the meaning in their lives so they ‘re looking for it all the time”, the author
especially the readers can relate big time since in these contemporary times people have
forgotten what it means to truly live but have taken up a materialistic and selfish worldly
pleasures aspiring goals rather than as Morrie says one should “ Invest in the human family and
invest in people “. Even if this book doesn’t make you all the tears nevertheless it will certainly
make you question the meaning of life, the egoistic approach which our culture alas has
normalized, well be like morrie as he beautifully sums up “ You have to be strong enough to
say if the culture doesn’t work don’t buy it, create your own” and that’s exactly what morrie did
in his final few weeks, despite struggling physically , morrie invested his time in people
especially enhancing his relation from a regular coach as mitch used to call morrie to being a
life long teacher, a friend, a father to the author.

Recommendations on reading Tuesday with morrie

I am not going to lie when I say this book is full of life impacting lessons especially well suited
for young adults especially fresh college students as it implores heavily on its audience to live a
little, money ,power, all these materialistic mindset won’t matter one day as death if inevitable
and you can either make peace with the fact death is inescapable or you could become another
slave bot as quoted in the book by the author “I traded a lot of dreams for a bigger paycheck and
I never even realized I was doing it,basically meaning that the hunger to acquire wealth is an
unsatiable one ,instead one should live a little bit by bit.

Therefore I would highly recommend this rollercoaster packed awestrucking book to youngsters
especially teenagers and young adults.
